Event description
*** CHANGE OF TIME – This talk will now take place at 10am – we apologies for any inconvenience ***
A fully illustrated account of the life and times of local Washington girl Gertrude Bell. Bell has been described as the Female Lawrence of Arabia (…and his mother came from Sunderland as well !). Blue stocking, mountain climber, archaeologist, explorer and diplomat Gertrude Bell’s activities in Mesopotamia literally shaped the world we live in now for good or ill! Ever controversial because of her role in the creation of the modern states of the Middle East, and because of her love life, she ended a fascinating life with a mysterious death.
Stuart Miller was formerly a historian at the University of Sunderland and is currently a tutor for the Workers’ Educational Association.
