Event description

Poet, playwright and performer Julie Carter invites you to join this one-off workshop seeking to explore feelings and meanings of what it is to belong in the context of coming from, or living in, the Sunderland area.

During the workshop Julie will share poetic extracts from her new work in development, a play and associated book entitled After Darkness Light. The title comes from the motto of Julie’s comprehensive school in Sunderland (post tenebras lux).

About the workshop:

The workshop will involve exploring, through discussion of Julie’s readings and some writing exercises, what home means to you. There will be no pressure to share work if you do not wish to. It will be informal and inclusive and anyone is welcome; no previous writing experience required.

It will appeal to anyone interested in place, memory and personal narratives. Julie’s personal story involves some difficult topics around domestic abuse and these are dealt with sensitively within the work, but the main focus of this workshop will be on the aspects of what makes the north-east a special place to come from or belong to.

About Julie:

Julie is a former GP and an experienced workshop facilitator who is interested in gaining your perspectives and sharing stories in a creative effort to nurture healing and connection with humour and compassion. Please get in touch if you have any questions and booking in advance is helpful.
