Event description
Join us at Arts Centre Washington this November for a screening of Joshua Oppenheimer’s surreal and searing document of evil – The Act of Killing.
In 1965, Anwar Congo and his paramilitary death squad were responsible for the murder and torture of over a million of their countrymen in Indonesia’s anti-communist purge. Heralded a national hero in the ensuing forty years, Congo is more than happy when an American filmmaker asks him to re-enact of his crimes in a range of Hollywood styles – that’s until he must reckon with his conscious.
The Act of Killing offers an insight into the memories and imaginations of war criminals who have won, highlighting a frighteningly banal culture of impunity in which killers can joke about crimes against humanity on television chat shows.
