Members of East Durham Artists’ Network (EDAN) have worked in collaboration with the Durham University Energy Institute and their interdisciplinary Geothermal Energy from Mines and Solar Geothermal heat (GEMS) project team in delivering this mixed media exhibition. It focusses on East Durham after coal. Coal was not only a source of energy as fuel, but also the source of industrial, economic and social energy that shaped the physical and relational landscape. EDAN have looked at the transition to a world ‘beyond coal’, examining issues such as what is happening now in terms of energy as fuel, how the coal past is being incorporated into the post coal present in terms of social life, community, former mining sites, buildings and spaces.
