Event description
Join us for a free, relaxed screening of Pablo Berger’s life-affirming buddy movie – Robot Dreams.
Robot Dreams follows a lonely dog in 1980s New York who builds a robot to be his friend, and together they share a joyful summer before an unexpected separation means they need to learn about friendship, change, and moving on.
The film will be preceded by a screening of of-the-wall short – Boogie 900: Makaton Robot.
When the robots of Planet Beebop run low on Makaton words, it’s up to Boogie 9000 to go to Earth to find some more.
There will also be craft packs and colouring sheets available to take into the screening.
This screening is part of Daydream Cinema’s Dreams of Steel: Animated Tales of Connection.
This double bill pairs Pixar’s WALL-E with Pablo Berger’s Robot Dreams—two deeply moving, dialogue-light films that explore loneliness, love, and what it means to connect. Offering a celebration of empathy, memory, and companionship – no humans required.
Before You Arrive
- Staff will be on hand to welcome you and answer any questions
- You will be able to enter the screening space early if this helps
- A visual guide/social story can be provided in advance if you would find it helpful
During the Screening
- The seating capacity will be reduced to allow you space to move around – you are free to come and go
- There will be a relaxed atmosphere meaning you’re free to make noise – talking, stimming, and movement are welcome
- The lights are turned up a little, and the sound is turned down a bit and the film will have subtitles
- There will be a quiet space where you can take a break if you need it – ear defenders and sensory aids are absolutely fine to bring

After the Film
You are welcome to stay for a few minutes to avoid busy exits. Staff will be around if you have any questions or need support leaving the venue calmly.
What is Autonomy?
This relaxed screening is part of Sunderland Culture’s Autonomy project.
Autonomy is a new, creative programme for autistic individuals living in Sunderland. It has been set up to help autistic young people (16-25) to socially and creatively connect with other autistic young adults and their carers. We believe that autistic adults should have the freedom and ability to enjoy creative and cultural opportunities, whilst being respected as individuals with unique needs and preferences.
The Autonomy project is generously supported by the Association of Independent Museums (AIM) Connected Communities programme, which is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s Know Your Neighbourhood Fund, through Arts Council England.
