Event description
Join regional news icon Mike Neville as he journeys along the North East’s three great rivers – the Tyne, Wear and Tees. Originally aired in Tyne Tees Television’s 1962 Your Heritage series, this trio of films explores each river from source to sea, capturing their industrial, urban, rural, and historic character. Playful and insightful, the series offers a vivid snapshot of the region’s social and economic life in the early 60’s.
The films will be followed by a talk from underwater archaeologist Gary Bankhead.
Unearthing the River: Underwater Discoveries from Durham to Sunderland
Join Gary Bankhead, underwater archaeologist and founder of the Durham River Wear Assemblage, for a compelling talk that dives deep into the hidden histories beneath the surface of the River Wear. Drawing on over 14,500 artefacts recovered from the waters near Durham’s Elvet Bridge, Gary will explore how these typically small metal objects—spanning the late- and post-medieval periods—are reshaping our understanding of Durham’s past.
In addition to showcasing highlights from his ongoing research, Gary will unveil brand-new discoveries from the River Wear at Sunderland, offering fresh insights into Romano-British trade and river-based activity in the area. These findings, never before shared publicly, shed light on how the river functioned as a vital conduit for movement, exchange, and cultural connection during this formative period.
