An evening of stripped-back performances from The Lake Poets, David Brewis, Isabel Maria, Nadedja and Georgia Ruyi, accompanied by the Crude Tarmac String Quintet.

Quite Quiet’s monthly shows have seen a mix of established and emerging local artists performing hushed sets in Sunderland city centre since May. For their November gathering, the setting will be the bigger, but no-less cosy environs of the auditorium at Arts Centre Washington. And to make the evening even more special, each artist will be joined by the Crude Tarmac String Quintet playing specially-written arrangements of their songs.

Marty Longstaff has been distilling Sunderland’s heart and soul into song as The Lake Poets for more than a decade. His hopeful ruminations on place, memory and belonging have earned him a special place in the city’s cultural fabric.

David Brewis has been making records with his brother Peter as Field Music since 2004. Since then they’ve amassed a back catalogue of 21 albums, including film soundtracks, collaborations, and solo projects such as David’s 2023’s string-laden, jazz-inflected The Soft Struggles.

Isabel Maria is a rising star of the North East music scene, crafting introspective pop on recordings and on stage since her debut release in 2021. Isabel was awarded the prestigious Alan Hull songwriting prize in 2024 and later that year was named Newcomer of the Year at the North East Culture Awards.

The Crude Tarmac Strings, featuring Ed Cross and Jo Montgomery on violin, Chrissie Slater on viola, Ele Leckie on cello and joined by John Pope on upright bass, have been regular collaborators with the Brewis brothers since Peter’s 2013 Frozen By Sight project with Maximo Park’s Paul Smith.
