Creative You

Free to access arts activities for young people at Arts Centre Washington

Creative You is a major youth-focused creative programme delivered from Arts Centre Washington and led by Sunderland Culture, the project is funded by Sunderland City Council’s Washington Area Committee. It is designed to engage young people across Washington in high-quality free to access arts activity while supporting their wellbeing, confidence, and aspirations.

What Creative You Is About?

Creative You aims to:

· Engage young people in a wide range of free to access creative activities and meaningful arts experiences.

· Support emotional and mental wellbeing, confidence, and self-esteem.

· Reach young people aged 11–19 from all backgrounds across Washington.

· Build skills so young people can tell important, relevant stories through the arts.

The programme has a strong emphasis on inclusion, aspiration-building, and celebrating young people’s creative voices through public exhibitions, events, and festivals.

Where it happens

Creative You is based at Arts Centre Washington, with satellite activity in various other Washington venues including:

  • Washington Millenium Centre
  • Washington Library
  • Washington Old Hall
Funding and Partnership

Creative You is funded by Sunderland City Council’s Washington Area Committee (Neighbourhood Fund / Positive Activities for Young People).

Impact and Scale

By 2024, the programme had:

· Engaged over 980 young people across Washington.

· Established multiple regular youth arts groups and holiday activities.

Activities and Groups – The programme offers regular creative groups including:

Regular Groups

  • Teenage Craft Club – craft skills with visiting artists; work sold at craft fairs.
  • Bright Lights Young Artists Collective – visual arts development.
  • Washington Young Filmmakers Collective
  • Animate Club
  • Washington Young Writers Collective

Creative Taster Sessions & Workshops

There have also been taster sessions, festivals, exhibitions and one off workshops during holiday times with activities including pottery, dance, radio drama, rap workshops and more!

Showcasing Young People’s Creativity

A key strand of Creative You is presenting young people’s work publicly to build pride, connection, and visibility. Examples include:

  • Exhibitions and public showcases at ACW.
  • Contributions to the Bright Lights Youth Arts Festival at ACW.
  • Taking part in Craft and Makers Fairs.
  • Films screened at national short film festivals.
