Step inside Culture House—and see Sunderland as you have never seen it before.
Created to mark the opening of Culture House, HOME is a spectacular immersive mixed-reality experience bringing professional performers and up to 80 members of Sunderland’s communities together to tell the story of a city: where it has come from, what it carries with it and what it could become.
You will see live performers, the people around you and the building itself transformed by extraordinary digital worlds.
Guided by Lyra, a young Sunderland astronaut, you will travel from the banks of the Wear to the edge of the known universe. You will look back at our fragile planet, move through billions of years of cosmic history and return home to discover the people whose knowledge, courage, invention, art and music have helped shape Sunderland.
Then the story turns towards the future.
Throughout Culture House, new ideas and imagined worlds begin to emerge. A generation of young writers, artists, inventors, musicians and makers show us what can happen when a creative spark is recognised and given somewhere to grow.
Live performance and digital imagination unfold together as Culture House becomes a spacecraft, a time machine, a living archive and a home for possibilities not yet imagined.
At its heart, HOME is a story told by Sunderland. Professional artists and up to 80 community performers fill the building, bringing its balconies, floors and public spaces to life in a shared celebration of belonging, creativity and hope.
This is more than a performance inside a new building. It is the moment Culture House opens itself to the city—and the city becomes part of its story.

What to expect from HOME
HOME is a live, immersive performance combining performers, music, lighting and digital imagery. It is not a traditional seated show – you will explore different parts or Culture House Sunderland and choose your own route through the experience.
Before you arrive
Please arrive five minutes before the time shown on your ticket. Doors open at the ticket time and there will not be a traditional pre-show waiting period.
You will be offered a headset that adds digital imagery to the live performance and physical surroundings. Our team will help you fit and adjust it.
Wearing a headset is optional. You can remove it at any time and will still be able to experience the live performers, music and staging.
The performance involves moving between different areas of Culture House. Step-free routes and seated options are available. Please contact us beforehand if you would benefit from either.
The performance includes loud and spatial sound, dimly light areas, changing lights, fast-moving imagery and simulated movement, height and flight. There is a rocket launch, and large objects and figures appearing in the space.
There will be no strobe lighting.
Occasionally, headsets can cause dizziness, nausea, eyestrain, headache or disorientation. You may remove yours, take a break or leave the experience whenever you need to. Please ask a member of staff for help if you feel uncomfortable.
Most glasses can be worn with the headset, depending on the size and shape of the frames. Please contact us if you wear hearing devices, religious or cultural headwear, or other equipment around your head so we can discuss the most comfortable option.
HOME is recommended for ages 11+. The headset manufacturer sets a minimum age of 10.
Under-16s must attend with a responsible adult. For school visits, pupils must remain under the supervision of school staff.
HOME will begin with the audience entering Culture House and you will be given a headset. There is 30 minutes for you to enter, get comfortable in the headset and then the show will start. The performance will last for approximatively 50 minutes.
The performance contains brief references to dyslexia, financial barriers. There are no graphic depictions of violence or injury.
Please let us know if you would benefit from a seated or step-free route, a quieter option, additional time to move around or any other support.
