Event description

Join us on Saturday 2nd November for a talk between artist-photographer Ian Macdonald, whose critically acclaimed exhibition, Fixing Time, is currently on display at Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art and Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens and filmmaker Dr Warren Harrison whose film, The Creek, is included within the exhibition.

In advance of the talk The Creek will be screened with an introduction from the filmmaker Warren Harrison (running time 42 minutes).

At the conclusion of the talk there will be chance to ask questions, a book signing and a chance to see a selection of Ian Macdonald’s workprints not included within the exhibition. The exhibition ‘Fixing Time’ will be available to view before and after the event. Books, limited prints and postcards are available to buy from the National Glass Centre shop.

Ian Macdonald’s work has found prominence in numerous exhibitions across the United Kingdom, including prestigious venues such as the Royal Academy, The Photographers Gallery, and the Serpentine Gallery in London. His pieces are held in esteemed public and private art collections globally, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Danish Royal Library in Copenhagen, the Navigation Foundation in Boston, the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol, the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead, and the MIMA Collection in Middlesbrough. Residing in the village of Grosmont in the North York Moors, Ian Macdonald stands as a celebrated figure in the world of contemporary British photography.

Warren Harrison took up an academic position at Teesside University in 2002 to develop newly established film and television production degree courses, after working for 10 years in documentary television. He is currently Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) at Teesside University. His film, The Creek (2018), inspired by Ian Macdonald’s Cote Hill Island photograph, was developed as a practice-based research project funded by the University, and formed part of his PhD. The film examines a working-class community that existed in Teesside from the early 20th century to the mid 1980’s. The work investigates the community in relation to the plotlands developments within the socio-economic development of Teesside, depictions of gender, as well as the examination of the work of Ian Macdonald. The work has been screened to both public and academic audiences regionally and globally. It has now been deposited with the North East Film Archive to ensure public access.
