Bloom Boom!
Open call for knitted, crochet or stitched flowers and bees
Closes 20 May 2026
Part of the National Trust’s Festival of Blossom
Do you love knitting, crochet and crafting? Or are you looking to be inspired to learn new skills?
Join us to celebrate the National Trust’s Festival of Blossom by making beautiful white and pink flowers to decorate community gardens across the city including Mowbray Park Community Garden and Just Let Your Soul Grow Community Garden. Our call out for blooms closes on Wednesday 20 May, ready for a yarn bombing garden takeover during May half term.
The project has been inspired by the botanical drawings of Sunderland artist Charles Muir from our Museum collections.
What to create
We’re looking for white and pink flowers – all shades of pink welcome. We’re also looking for some black and yellow bees that can make up part of the installation. These will help to form an outdoor display, so to make sure they last in all weather, make sure you use acrylic wool or felt to create your flowers and bees.
Each flower or bee should be around 5 – 15cm in diameter.
Please note that we won’t be able to return your creations once they have been submitted.
Crochet patterns
Kerry from The Art Room has created patterns you can use to create your blooms. In the PDF pack, you will find two crochet patterns, one for a flower and the other for a bee. Both patterns are designed to be suitable for beginners.
