Dan Holdsworth’s sculptural series Spatial Objects is currently on display at City Hall, as part of a long-term loan programme.

For over 20 years, British artist Dan Holdsworth has been blending art, science and nature. His works challenge our perceptions and reinvent the notion of landscape.

Presented at a monumental scale in the pure RGB colours of all digital screens, Spatial Objects is a series of sculptures. Each one represents a single data point marking a GPS coordinate – from the dramatic volcanic landscape of America’s deepest lake, Crater Lake in the western US. The works make the virtual space of the digital realm seem startlingly real. Going beyond the limits of representation, what you see in these works are the edges and fragments of the pixel resolved within the geometry of the interface itself, transformed into pure colour and light.

Interior view of a modern building featuring a grand staircase with dark red paneling and a large, vertical blue artwork mounted on the front-facing wall of the staircase. The open space includes balconies with white railings and tall windows, letting in natural light. Two people are visible—one descending the stairs with a motion blur, and another walking past on the right. Two circular information desks are positioned on either side of the staircase at the ground level.

Interior hallway in a modern office space. On the brown-paneled wall are two vertical sculptural artworks—one red and one blue—both with folded, geometric surfaces that create shadows and depth. To the right of the artworks is a large screen displaying a public service announcement about adult abuse and safeguarding from the Sunderland Safeguarding Adults Board. A person walks away down the hallway, which is lined with office spaces behind glass-panelled doors. The floor is carpeted in a neutral tone.
