Poverty Proofing

A crucial part of Culture Start’s legacy is the delivery of a Poverty Proofing programme, developed by Children North East.

The programme’s aim is to help cultural organisations in the city identify and remove some of the barriers that children and young people experiencing financial hardship may face when accessing their offer.

During our first year, Children North East worked with 53 staff at Arts Centre Washington, National Glass Centre, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens and We Make Culture through consultations, staff training sessions and mystery shoppers. Children North East then shared a detailed report and recommendations to support organisations make their venues and programmes more accessible to those living in poverty.

Research by University of Sunderland’s Institute for Economic and Social Inclusion

Culture Start is supported by the University of Sunderland’s Institute for Economic and Social Inclusion as research and evaluation partner.

This partnership will allow us to access the impact and change to children and young people’s lives and opportunities. An evaluation toolkit will be applied to the programme and made available for other organisations in Sunderland to help demonstrate their impact.
