We are seeking to commission an artist to work with young people and the project teams to collaboratively design and install a mural on an outdoor sturcture/s at Rainton Meadows as part of the Green Spaces, Shared Places project.
About Green Spaces, Shared Places
Green Spaces, Shared Places is part of Going Places, a touring exhibition and engagement programme that places under-represented community voices at the heart of cultural production. The Green Spaces, Shared Places network is one of six UK-wide network partnerships, comprising 20 museums, galleries and heritage sites across the UK.
Our Green Spaces, Shared Places network partners include the National Memorial Arboretum, The Dales Countryside Museum (Yorkshire Dales National Park) and Arlington Court and National Trust Carriage Museum (National Trust) and our focus is working with young people aged 13 – 30 years to co-produce the exhibitions and supporting programmes.
The project explores themes of place, nature, collections, and identity, connecting people to the Museum and their local green spaces in new ways. The young people involved in the project are currently working on defining the scope of the exhibition with a heavy emphasis on the memory of the landscape coming to the forefront.
The Green Spaces, Shared Places team are in the process of developing a co-produced touring exhibition with young people from Sunderland. This will be the first of two touring exhibitions being developed by the Green Spaces, Shared Places network during the programme period from 2025 – 2030 and will launch at the National Memorial Arboretum in May 2026, then tour to each of the network partner venues, being hosted in Sunderland from March – June 2027.
In anticipation of Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens being closed in Spring 2027 for a redevelopment project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Tour will be based at Durham Wildlife Trust’s headquarters Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve and will involve working with young people and communities from the Coalfields area of the city.
Going Places is an Art Fund programme made possible with major support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The Julia Rausing Trust, with additional support from a generous group of trusts, foundations and individuals.
About the role
This mural commission is focused around the Rainton Meadows Nature Park strand of the project. The artist will work with the Rainton Meadows Conservation Rangers (14–18-year-olds), the Durham Wildlife Trust team, the Rainton community and the Green Spaces, Shared Places team to collaboratively design and install a mural on an outdoor structure or structures at Rainton Meadows.
When the Green Spaces, Shared Places touring exhibition tours to Sunderland in March 2027, Rainton Meadows will be part of the exhibition trail. The indoor exhibition will be installed at Houghton Library and outdoor exhibition content will be placed throughout Rainton Meadows in the form of listening posts/seating where oral histories will be installed. It is envisioned that audiences will be encouraged to start their engagement with the exhibition at either Houghton Library or Rainton Meadows and using interactive content be guided between the two sites to fully explore the exhibition.
Additionally, a film we have commissioned will also be installed at Rainton Meadows in a permanent structure already installed at the site, The Den. The Den is a shipping container structure that was installed several years ago and is used for a variety of activities, with a particular focus on children and young people. It is hoped that in engaging the Rainton Meadows Conservation Rangers (14–18-year-olds) as part of this mural project, they will feel a sense of ownership over the structure.
This commission is to design and install mural work on the outside of the Den and potentially the fencing surrounding the small deck. The mural work should be installed on the front aspect of the Den structure only as the sides are not accessible to the public.
This mural commission is designed to;
- Provide a visual link to the wider Green Spaces, Shared Places exhibition and act as a permanent site-specific work ahead of the touring exhibition installation in March 2027 whilst staying faithful to the wider site and the structures other uses.
- Use robust, outdoor/weather safe paints that are appropriate for the surface material of the structure. Please note there is not sufficient budget for vinyl wrapping, this must be painted mural work only.
- Use the creative consultation work already completed with the Rainton Meadows Conservation Rangers (14–18-year-olds) to inform the proposed design. Read Creative Consultation Report
