Two people stand on a beach with their backs to the camera. They tie many colourful ribbons to a long wooden pole. The ribbons are purple, blue, yellow, and red. A small glowing lantern and a string of lights hang from the pole. In the background, the sea has small white waves. Far away in the water, there is a tall white lighthouse on a long stone wall. The sky is grey and cloudy.

Sunderland Culture Launches New Volunteer Programme

Love Sunderland and want to get involved in the city’s big moments? Then a new volunteer project is just for you!

City Volunteers is a new way of contributing to making Sunderland a better place – a network of volunteers who get exclusive opportunities direct from the project’s key city partners. You could get involved in musical festivals, the city’s markets or special events such as BBC Radio One’s Big Weekend this May.

The City Volunteers project is led by Sunderland Culture in partnership with Sunderland Business Improvement District (BID), Foundation of Light and Culture House, and is supported by the North East Combined Authority.

Nick Malyan, Chief Executive of Sunderland Culture, explained: “We’re looking for people who love Sunderland – who are kind, curious, welcoming and proud of where they’re from, or proud to call it home. Whether you’ve lived here forever or just arrived, whether you’ve volunteered before or not – everyone’s welcome.

“You can choose the events that fit your time and interests – from the city’s big moments like the Keel Square fireworks to music festivals, markets, sporting events and more.

“You’ll gain new skills, meet brilliant people, and be part of big moments in Sunderland’s cultural life.

“City Volunteers is a new way to get involved in Sunderland’s transformation. Apply once, take part in free, high-quality training, and you’ll join a network of volunteers who get exclusive opportunities direct from partners across the city.”

A key part of the programme will be the training programme delivered to volunteers. Every City Volunteer will receive training designed to set them up to confidently volunteer at a range of events. Training will include customer service, safeguarding, and health & safety.

To qualify, volunteers will need to go through an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, a background check that helps organisations make safer recruitment decisions by revealing any criminal records an individual may have.

Volunteers must be over the age of 16, and for more information, or to apply to be a City Volunteer, go to https://www.sunderlandculture.org.uk/projects-partnerships/cityvolunteers/

Nick added: “From event skills to customer service, sustainability to leadership, City Volunteers offers brilliant opportunities to grow confidence and experience – and will look great on a CV!”
