Event description

Looking for an exciting way to spend time outdoors? Our 10-week Forest School course for home educated young people aged 12 – 16 offers a chance to explore, create and connect to nature in a beautiful community garden setting in Mowbray Park.

Sessions are hands-on and learner-led with activities including tool use and green woodworking skills, campfire cooking, nature crafts, shelter building and wildlife exploration – all shaped by the interests of the group.

For the young people this is a space to be themselves, try new challenges, build confidence and enjoy time with others who learn differently. Forest school encourages independence, teamwork and problem solving, while also providing plenty of freedom to relax, have fun and enjoy the outdoors. No prior experience is required, just curiosity and a willingness to get a bit wet and muddy.

For parents, the course offers a supportive, nurturing environment led by 2 qualified Forest School practitioners from OASES, with a strong focus on wellbeing, personal development and safe risk-taking. Spending regular time in nature has proven benefits for mental health, resilience and social skills, making this an enriching addition to your home education journey. Come and be part of a welcoming garden community where learning happens naturally.
This course is open to home educated young people aged 12 – 16 living in Sunderland and parents and carers are welcome to attend.
